The former slave ship owner turned Christian and author of the classic hymn “Amazing Grace,” John Newton, has been seeing some huge popularity this year with several projects after his name.
Now, a Broadway scale musical can be added to that list.
On Friday, a reading for “Amazing Grace: The True Story” was held at Kings College located in the Empire State Building in Manhattan.
The musical tells the story of John Newton and “an epic musical saga of storms, slavery, romance, and redemption.”
With a cast completely comprised of Broadway veterans – almost exclusively from Les Miserables – the performances were amazing and gave some much needed professionalism to the Christian story.
The faith was not kept from the material, however, as many big budget acts tend to do. Instead, the script was true to the life of Newton and showed his amazing return to God.
Although readings prohibit the use of costumes, props and sets, a person would have never noticed. The story shined through without anything fancy.
And the musical numbers were far from cheesy. They had deep reflection inside of them as well as catchy tunes and beautiful ballads.
When the play hits the stage in a few months, it is for sure going to create a stir.
